The Umzinto Shooting Club is comprised of local shooting enthusiasts from Umzinto and the surrounding area who have reconstituted their sport shooting activities. The club was previously known as Bravo Shooting Club and had the privilege of utilizing the Ellingham quarry as a shooting range, a location also used for 4x4 driving courses. Following the disbandment of Bravo in 2019, Ellingham Estate has generously extended permission for Umzinto Shooting Club to continue shooting at the quarry, commencing in 2022.
It is important to note that the Umzinto Shooting Club is not a commercial shooting range or business. Unlike many other shooting facilities, the club does not offer products and is not affiliated with any gun shops. Instead, it operates as a cooperative, with a primary focus on practical sport shooting tailored for the average firearm owner.
A core priority for the club is to make shooting accessible and affordable for its members. Their shooting events are designed with lower round counts, enabling members to learn and practice essential safe firearm handling skills without incurring substantial ammunition expenses. Specifically, a typical handgun event will not require more than 30 rounds. Shotgun and rifle events (SLR) are structured to require no more than 5 rounds for members to compete and maintain their dedicated sport shooting status for Section 16 firearms. Members who wish to use more ammunition for additional practice or reshoots are welcome to do so.
The Umzinto Shooting Club aims to be inclusive and welcoming to all shooting enthusiasts. To maintain this broad appeal, the club has chosen to remain independent and not affiliate with any formal sport shooting associations. The club believes that affiliation can potentially increase costs for individual shooters and introduce unnecessary complexities that may detract from the enjoyment of the sport. The club's focus is centered on fostering camaraderie among members, demonstrating patience with newcomers, and collectively developing the skills of the entire membership in terms of accuracy, speed, and power. Their goal is to recapture the original fun and skill-building objectives of practical shooting.
The club's shoots are envisioned as opportunities for members to enjoy time with fellow enthusiasts and friends while safely enhancing their firearm skills and strengthening the local Umzinto firearms community. Those who want to expand their proficiency can do course with Shepherd Defence at the range. For individuals seeking advanced tactical training, the club recommends specialized courses such as 'Fortis Pro'. Those interested in pursuing high-level competitive shooting at provincial or national levels may be directed to affiliated SAPA or SAPSA clubs located nearby.
The Range Safety Officer is personally dedicated to assisting all members in becoming more proficient and safe with their firearms through individualized coaching. Once a member demonstrates a safe level of competency, they are invited to participate in the club's practical shoots, which are held every second Saturday. Many of the club's members are also actively involved in the Umzinto Community Watch, working in close collaboration with the SAPS Umzinto Sector.
To cover the necessary costs associated with organizing shoots, maintaining the range area, constructing targets, calculating scores, and certifying activities for members with dedicated status at Natshoot or FOSA, the club charges a flat range fee of R50 per shoot. There are no other membership fees or subscriptions at the moment. The Umzinto Shooting Club is overseen by a dedicated Executive Oversight Group (EOG) consisting of three members including the RO.

Natshoot members participate in natshoot hunting and sports shooting related activities as their time allows them, and where it is most convenient for them to partake in said activities.

The South African Gunowners' Association (SAGA) is a non-profit, non-discriminatory organization, whose sole purpose is to represent the interests of all people who embrace the principles of safe and responsible ownership and usage of firearms for sport, recreation, hunting and self-defence.
