Dedicated sport shooters:
Natshoot, Narfo and Fosa shooters can shoot their required activity targets at the range and have the range officer certify them. Dedicated shooters must shoot their own targets for dedicated status.
Every dedicated sport shooter participating in handgun or SLR will be required to place a minimum of 5 shots on the regulation scoring target shown below to submit to your sporting body (Natshoot or FOSA) as a sport shooting activity for your section 16 licence. Dedicated status must not be used as a loophole to obtain licences for restricted semi-automatic rifles and shotguns.
This target will be attached onto one of the standard targets during the event. You are responsible for your own target and to ensure it is signed by the range officer.
For shotgun events you will be required to shoot a minimum of 5 shots on 5 steel plates within a required time with or without a reloading drill incorporated into the drill. There is a different score sheet for shotguns that must be signed by the RO.
(It is advisable that occasional sport shooters also build a record of their regular sport shooting activity, it helps with your motivation when applying for another firearm licence.)
Range register:
All shooters must sign the range register which includes the acknowledgement of the range rules and indemnity.
Ammunition.
A shooter can shoot as many rounds as they want to, but because ammunition is expensive, we limit the required rounds to participate in matches.
Minimum ammunition requirements
Handgun 30 rounds
SLR 5 rounds (if rifle event is scheduled with handgun)
Shotgun 5 rounds (if shotgun event shoot is scheduled with handgun)
No handgun shoot will require more than 30 rounds and no SLR or shotgun event will require more than 5 rounds. A shooter that wants to reshoot SLR or shotgun events may do so if they want to. The purpose of the minimum round count is to reduce costs to the shooter.
Personal Protection Equipment
No shooter or spectator may be on range without eyes and ears protection.
(Note: Gunfire noise causes permanent hearing damage and aggravates hearing loss permanently.
Shrapnel and plash back from the bullet trap can cause serious eye damage.)
Range fee: R50
(range fee will increase to R70 in 2026 due to increased operating costs
Pensioner range fee will remain at R50)
(Range fees can be paid cash or by card)
